While lubes are available in a rainbow of colors and flavors, what they’re made of is what really counts:

• Petroleum-based: Made from petroleum jelly or mineral oil, these lubes are known to destroy latex on the spot and should not be used with condoms, diaphragms or cervical caps. They also promote bacterial build-up and require careful cleansing after use.
• Oil-based: Usually made from vegetable oils, these lubes tend to stain fabrics. While safe for vaginal lubrication, they can also destroy latex and are not safe for use with condoms.
• Water-based: Containing deionized water, glycerin and non-toxic preservatives, water-based lubricants such as Astroglide don’t irritate the skin and are safe for use with condoms.
