I'm SO stupid.

My girlfriend and I had been dating almost a year and had been talking about marriage. I knew she was the one, but yet, I was a little shy about asking her to marry me. Hey, I had never done it before. And you never know, she might say no, right?

So I had a "genius" idea.

The most idiotic "genius" idea I've perhaps ever had. I got down on one knee, gave a moving speech about my love for her, and asked her to marry me.

She gladly said yes and was deeply moved.

At which point I said... wait for it... "April Fool's!"

Yes, it was April 1st and I figured, what a great time to try it all out without really have to go through with it. I believe this is what folks in Washington call a trial balloon. Well, to anyone who has an even modicum of understanding of the female species will tell you, this went over like a led zeppelin. The actual zeppelin, not the band.

Long story short, she did resume talking to me at some point. And we are now married. Thanks to that proposal spring training, I really did knock it out of the park when I asked her for real.

Men of the world out there, don't even think of trying this. It was incredibly stupid. If you're going to use this story, use it to make yourself look better with your girlfriend. So if your proposal does go awry, you can at least say, "Hey babe, I'm better than that guy that came up with an April Fool's proposal for his girlfriend."
