With sexual desire, sexual experimentation, physical pleasure and alcohol use amongst the top reasons many men and women engage in booty calls, there’s plenty of fun to be had in pursuing these enviable sexual romps. For those into such casual sex, a main concern, however, is making sure that these sexcapades aren’t mine-ridden. While there are “no strings attached,” such relations need to be handled with a degree of caution, with lovers taking care to respect the other person.

So be sure to consider the following essential elements of booty call etiquette, sure to help both of you come away gratified!

Consider the expectations you have about casual sexual encounters. If you want a successful booty call situation, DON’T see yourself as having a future with this individual and vice versa. If you want a future with this person, then avoid such intimacy and opt for the old-fashioned route – go on a wine’n’dine date!

Communicate. Set rules, e.g., “we’re only going to have casual sex with each other and will re-evaluate the situation when somebody else tempts either of us for a shag.” State your expectations, e.g., “I’m only in this for physical gratification,” so that there’s no confusion of your intentions.

Conduct regular emotional checks, making sure to talk about what might be assumed, such as that this person is not falling for you. Ensure that things remain casual and that feelings aren’t being evoked with situations, like when seeing other people.

Don’t feel used, as you are also using. Control the situation and milk it for its maximum worth! Booty calls are not for the fragile.

Watch your alcohol intake, since too much liquor can open emotional floodgates and increase your chances of engaging in behaviors you’re not ready for. Plus, it can make for a messier, riskier situation.

Always practice safer sex (oral, vaginal, or anal sex involving practices that reduce the risk of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy). Talk about what you and your partner will do to make booty calls a safe space for the two of you, e.g., using condoms or dental dams. Inform yourselves as to which sexual behaviors put you at greater risk for sexual health threats, e.g., genital warts can be transmitted via skin-on-skin contact during grinding.

(You don’t want any physical reminders of this relationship weeks or months down the road. The memory is plenty.)

Plan for a graceful and easy exit when you’re tired of playing. You never know when you might want to come back for more…

Strive to part on friendly terms, remembering that booty call relationships tend not to go hand in hand with good friendships.
